Art Project Show

When I did the recent post about the "Molly" shaker ball I made, I realized I hadn't done a blog post about the show of the Community Arts Project that happened this past summer with Lauren Raine, the artist fellow in town for the summer, who worked with Kathy Space of Space Studios. The show took place at our local Center for the Arts, for just one evening.

I did a post about making the plaster molds of our faces and hands for this project, which you can read here.

Lauren and Kathy made clay pieces formed from the plaster molds, and Lauren painted them and mounted them on white-washed pine boards, along with various clay fetishes, or tokens, that Lauren had made. These were all hung in a long row upon a black wall for the show. It was very dramatic. Lauren's theme was the Spider Woman and how all living things are connected, and she wove a single strand of jute through the hands on the pieces to demonstrate this.

This is me - the one on the right...

and these are Sammy and Michael...

and this one is Kathy, and the large one, "Spider Woman" is one that Lauren made, I believe, from a mold of her own face...

For the show, which featured the works of 4 artists, each artist was introduced and then gave a talk about their project...

It was a very interesting evening. After the artists' presentations, there were refreshments and mingling... and then everyone there who had participated in Lauren's project took their board down from the wall and they got to take it home with them. It was kind of sad to see the long, black wall become empty of the pieces. But it was a pretty cool evening, all told. I don't remember exactly why, but Joycie wasn't there with us, it was just me, Kev & Sammy. In this photo of Kev and Sammy, you can see the reflection of the project on Kev's glasses...

Neat, huh.
